Working Methods; Starting a Commission

I will travel to the site of the painting wherever possible and photograph it,I will then make notes on dimensions, framing and will do some colour notes using small boards and paint.

At home I will prepare the canvas, draw out the design and do as much preparatory painting as possible before returning to the site of the original and finishing. This last process may take several days so unless I am staying on site I will need a B & B.
I will also require a reasonably well lit room, preferably with northern light.

Whatever price is quoted for the work will include travel, board and of course the frame.

Materials
Nearly all the pigments I use have been available for many centuries; I try to keep as close as possible to the original materials. Canvas, paint, medium etc are all as used for centuries. Lead white is still available (just) but is infinitely preferable to alkyd primers and whites based on titanium and zinc. Only a few colours are no longer available due to their toxicity. I use a manufacturer of paint who has been producing since the 17th century, so they are reliably well established.
